Damage to the optic nerve from Glaucoma.
Glaucoma is a disease that damages the optic nerve and causes blind spots in your field of vision. In severe cases, it can destroy the optic nerve and cause blindness. The risk factors for the disease include:
 Surgery Center Age
Surgery Center Severe nearsightedness (You can't see far away)
 Surgery Center Family history
 Surgery Center Diabetes
 Surgery Center African-American Decent

Early Symptoms
The early symptoms of glaucoma can be very slight. It may not become evident to you until you experience some vision loss, or in severe cases, blindness. The buildup of fluid pressure in the eye is gradual and may not cause any discomfort or pain. Once substantial sight loss has occurred, some portions of your peripheral vision are affected, followed by a decrease in the top and bottom vision. Later, you may experience mild headaches and have difficulty seeing at night. If your symptoms include blurred vision, severe pain, nausea and halos around lights, you may have acute closed angle glaucoma.

Screening Helps in Early Detection
Screening for glaucoma is the best way to detect the early onset of the disease. Our ophthalmologists can easily detect the symptoms-even before you experience any change in vision-by conducting a comprehensive and painless eye exam. If anything seems abnormal, your field of vision will be tested for blind spots or problems with peripheral (side) vision.

Prevention through early detection is the best way to avoid vision loss from glaucoma. Regular eye examinations are extremely important. Treatment for glaucoma involves medication or laser surgery to help decrease pressure inside the eye.
