Optimizing Your Vision In Your Golden Years

Blind spot created by Macular Degeneration
What is Macular Degeneration?
Caused by a breakdown in the central portion of the retina, macular degeneration often causes blurry or distorted vision that can interfere with reading, doing close work or driving. It can also cause a distortion in the center of what you are looking at or produce a dark or empty area.

Age is the greatest risk factor for macular degeneration.

At the Gerstein Eye Institute, we have years of experience in helping older adults who suffer from macular degeneration. We can easily check for this condition at your annual comprehensive eye exam. If macular degeneration is suspected, further procedures are required to determine the extent of the damage and develop a treatment plan.

Types of Treatment
Depending on the extent of the disease, the progression of macular degeneration may be slowed using laser treatment or injections. In addition, research shows that the use of a special formulation of antioxidant vitamins can significantly lower the risk of vision loss due to macular degeneration.

For information regarding vitamin supplementation to reduce the risk of macular generation or a brochure, call 773-973-3223.
